Fleece Artist went looking for what has been an elusive combination: organic wool with natural dyes. When they also didn't find it in quantities that were practical, they decided it was time to invent it. Fleece Artist commissioned one of Italy's best mills to spin out some high grade organic merino fleece. Then, they had the mill ship the newly spun yarn to Tintoria di Quaregna, Italy's premiere dye house specializing in beautiful natural dyes. Lanica was born!

And isn't it beautiful? To see these elegant colors wrapped around such an honest, soft wool, well, it does the heart good. Lanica is a top grade, single ply DK weight wool - the fact that it is also organic just makes it even more wonderful. Its colors come from plants and, in one case, an insect (cochineal), rendered stable without chemicals - they use no chemical mordants and finish the yarn with mild soap. (Lanica's color names tell you what was used to dye that yarn.) The results are elegant and just plain gorgeous - and very, very green.

A bit about Tintoria di Quaregna: They are Europe's most innovative dyehouse, and eco-friendly natural dyeing is one of their passions. Their natural dye color palette was selected and developed to resonnate with current fashion colors - you'll see that its understated hues will harmonize beautifully with your wardrobe.
